Why Do I Need A Billiard Service Professional to Move My Pool Table?
Choosing a company to move your pool table is a very important decision that some people do not recognize. In our experience, the local and even national moving companies are not educated on the subject of pool table installation, assembly, disassembly and moving.
Most pool tables on the market today are what is referred to as a 3-piece slate design which refers to the construction of the play surface of the pool table - 3 pieces of slate which are attached to the frame/cabinet and sealed to act as one solid, level playing surface. A pool table such as this MUST be disassembled to be moved. If a three piece slate pool table is moved in one piece it will most assuredly do damage to the slate, which in most cases causes the table to become invaluable. View How Do I Know If My Pool Table Is A 1-Piece or 3-Piece Slate? below.
Another factor to consider is the tools needed to perform the move. Most individuals do not have the tools needed to perform the job properly. Such tools include but are not limited to: impact drill, socket sets, screwdrivers, machinist's level, propane torch, bee's wax, electric staple gun, spray adhesive, hardwood wedges/shims and more.
What Is Involved In Moving My Pool Table? What Precautions Will Be Taken?
We at Southern Billiards have been providing the most dependable moving services in the Atlanta area for over 20 years with a 100% satisfaction rating. We won't quit until you're completely satisfied with the completed job. With that being said, we make every effort to protect your investment during a move.
We begin by removing the pockets (these may be leather, rubber or plastic depending on the design of the table) and marking the placement of the rails while dismantling them from the playing surface. From there, the felt will be removed carefully and gently making sure that slate framing stays in good condition and that the felt can be reused if desired. Once the pool table felt is removed we will index the slate to the frame so that the slate will go back into it's original position and will be attached just as it was before. If necessary, the pool table frame can then be indexed and disassembled to fit through doorways, stairwells, etc.
Before beginning the trip to the desired location the pool table will be carefully loaded upon the truck. The slate will be loaded on end and double strapped to the wall using e-track mounting supports. The frame will be supported in the same manner. The pool table rails will be secured and wrapped in moving blankets. Every situation is taken into consideration and we will guarantee a smooth transport.
When we arrive at the second location the pool table will be carefully unloaded and the frame will be placed in the desired area. We are occasionally asked to make recommendations for pool table placement which is not a problem. All of our crew members are very aware of the minimum room requirements which can be viewed on our Room Size Recommendations Chart below.
The above chart takes everything needed into consideration. To demonstrate, let's say you're looking to place an 8' pool table into your room. Using the chart above you can see that with a 57" pool cue you would need a space which measures 13'2" x 16'9". This allows for 3" of stroke all the way around the pool table if the cue ball were to be place directly against the rail. If your room seems to be a little tight you can use a shorter cue length to get you by.
After the frame is placed in the desired location the center piece of slate will be placed and attached to the frame in the same position it was originally in. Then, using a machinist's level which measures .005 in./sq. ft., the crew will perform a pre-level within in professional standards. After the center slate and frame are leveled within these parameters the two outside slates can then be placed and attached. The mover will then find the high point of the play surface and drive hardwood wedges beneath the three pieces of slate to bring each piece to a perfect plane.
Once the three pieces are aligned on the same plane the seams will then be reinforced with a fast drying adhesive and sealed with 100% pure American Bee's Wax. Once the seams are sealed they will be completely undetectable to the human eye or touch. From there the installer will clean the slate ensuring that there is no debris which might stay under the felt and create extrusions in the play surface. The felt will then be re-upholstered to the slate. The rails and pockets will then be re-attached and aligned to the play surface. Finally, the level will be checked one more time for accuracy and a new breaking spot will be placed on the felt.
No other company cares their customers and their pool tables like Southern Billiards. Our testimonials speak for themselves and we can assure a satisfaction guarantee, a timely service and a lifetime warranty on all of our services.

Please feel free to contact us with any questions or view our Cloth Color Options page for just a few of your many options.
How Do I Know If My Pool Table Is A 1-Piece Slate Or A 3-Piece Slate?
The majority of all pool tables in today's market are 3-piece slate, which is good for both parties. There is much less risk involved in moving a 3-piece slate pool table if the move is being performed by a billiard service professional. As described above, the 3-piece slate design requires that the table be taken apart when moved. Failure to do so will very likely result in extensive damage which may cost more than the pool table's worth to repair.
Most 1-piece slate pool tables are manufactured by abc, Dynamo, and Valley Co. These tables are normally found in bars and pool halls but do still exist in some households. We recommend you contact us if you are not sure whether your pool table is a one piece or three piece slate. We can normally tell you according to the brand name of the table.

What If My Rails Are Hard And Sound Different Than They Used To When Played On?
It is not uncommon for cushions, sometimes known as rails, to go bad on a pool table. This can be caused by a number of factors which include: heavy humidity, lack of play, low quality rubber. Some pool table manufacturers provide lifetime warranties on their tables which include the cushions while others do not. We recommend checking with the original seller of the pool table to see if your table has a warranty and if it is still available for you. If not, we do offer a lifetime warranty re-rubber service. When done properly this process takes about 2-3 days in which we will pick up your rails, perform the work and return again to install the rails. Please feel free to Contact Us with any questions.

How Far In Advance Do I Need To Schedule To Have My Pool Table Moved?
We can normally have our professional crew of pool table movers to your location within 2-3 days depending on our schedule load. We can sometimes move the table same day but we recommend at least a 3 day notice. Whenever you're ready to schedule just give us a call and one of our helpful associates will set up a time for you.
Will my pool table get new felt at the time of the move?
It is not a problem for us to use the same felt that is currently on the pool table. However, if you would like to change the felt at the time of the move you will save on the price of the recover. We have approx. 50 different cloth colors to choose from as well.
How long does it typically take to move my pool table?
Depending on the type of pool table and move distance, you can normally assume that the move will take approximately 3 hours (without drive time). Most quality pool tables consist of a 3-piece slate design and can be disassembled in approximately 1 hour. Once it has been transported and unloaded at the second location, the setup generally takes 1 to 1.5 hours. That time frame assumes that we will be using the same felt that is currently on the table. If you choose to have us install new felt it will normally add another 45 mintues to 1 hour to the job time.
